Recharge

Working is one of my favorite things, I genuinely love having work to do. Whether it be in the gym, with my patients or at home, I love the work.  In all transparency, there have been times when I prioritized work over things that really needed more attention. Things like getting my rest and spending time with those around me. The work is engaging and rewarding, often providing energy in itself, however it can be depleting as Iā€™m sure we are all familiar.

I would hazard to guess that most of us interact with electronic devices on a regular basis. Usage of said devices requires energy and power, as the day goes on that available energy diminishes. We plug our devices in to an electrical outlet and restore the energy used. Managing output requires the input of energy to continue to work the way we want to.

I have this discussion with patients often. Many of us want to get out there and take on the day, work hard and accomplish things. This is admirable, and requires a high level of output. Make sure to provide yourself with the required input to maintain the energy levels needed to thrive in the work you want to do.

Exercise in the gym is no different. The output needed is high, and if that output persists for long enough without the recharge things start to go wrong. Nagging aches become persistent sharp pains, mental acuity decreases, motivation wanes. Whether it be physical therapy, a hike in the mountains, or a day in the spa, be sure to take the time to recharge. Your output will be greater.
